Island Health says wood smoke a big contributor to ongoing air quality issues
The Cowichan Valley is facing some serious issues when it comes to air quality.
Island Health’s Dr. Paul Hasselback laid out the problem recently for North Cowichan Council.
He says particulate matter levels in the Valley frequently peak above provincial standards, and a lot of it comes down to people burning wood.
Hasselback – the medical health officer for the region – says poor air quality can cause serious health issues for children and the elderly… as well as for people with breathing or heart conditions.
He says local governments need to work together to deal with the problem.
