Island MLAs call on province to immediately halt work at SIA site
The Green Party’s MLA for Oak Bay – Gordon Head is calling on Island Health and the Ministry of Environment to halt work at a contaminated soil facility near Shawnigan Lake.
Andrew Weaver says the South Island Aggregates site should be shut down immediately based on the findings of a recent Cowichan Valley Regional District report.
He says he shares the CVRD’s concerns about the safety of the operations because surface water from the site is ending up on the Regional District’s land, which is a big no-no.
Meanwhile, Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley has written a letter to the Ministry about the report.
Both MLA’s say the permit is being violated because the Ministry requires all the surface water to be contained and treated on the property, which isn’t happening.
