Island marijuana dispensary owners puzzled by timing of police raids

The people who run marijuana dispensaries in the region say they’re mystified by the RCMP’s decision to start cracking down when some municipalities are looking at other strategies, and a change in the federal laws could be coming.

Nanaimo RCMP raided three dispensaries on Tuesday, after sending out warning letters November 12th.

Kirk Tousaw is a Vancouver-based lawyer and cannabis advocate who’s been acting for several dispensaries.

City Councils in Port Alberni, Victoria and Vancouver have all been moving toward some sort of licensing and regulation scheme while the Nanaimo Cannabis Coalition has been trying to convince that city to do the same.
