Coastal Fire Centre issues first ban of season

The Coastal Fire Centre has issued its first ban of the season.

As of noon on May 27th, Category 2 open fires will be prohibited throughout the Coastal Zone.

Donna MacPherson is a Fire Information Officer.

MacPherson says they’re also banning the use of things like fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, and burn barrels.

She says there have 36 fires in the Coast Fire Centre, and 17 of those have been caused by lightning strikes.

Coastal Fire Centre bans apply on Crown Land, or anywhere there aren’t already municipal or local fire department regulations in place – and they recommend you always check to confirm your local rules.
