March 18, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Becoming a Friend of the Watershed: The value that every single person has! A Free Event with Cowichan Tribes biologist Tim Kulchyski and local naturalist/photographer, Barry Hetschko.

The Cowichan Watershed Board’s March Speaker Night at VIU will be a unique and interesting evening, providing a glimpse into a relationship between two local people — one settler and one indigenous —that has grown organically through each of them doing what they do best for the Watershed, making each stronger as a result. Nutsamat kws yaay’us tu qa.

About the Speakers:
Tim Kulchyski – Natural Resource Consultant, Cowichan Tribes. Tim is Cowichan Tribes community member, working to project aquatic ecosystems and other values for the Lulumexun/Lands and Self-Governance Department of Cowichan Tribes First Nation. He has worked with a variety of clients assessing upland, freshwater and marine ecosystems for over 25 years. His work often involves examining the impacts of development on cultural values. Tim has traveled extensively studying the interaction between resource issues and cultural heritage. He was involved in a major Hul’qumi’num language revitalization initiative. Tim has served as a member of the Cowichan Watershed Board since its inception in 2010, and he also serves as Co-Chair of the Cowichan Watershed Society.

Barry Hetschko – Photographer and Watershed Volunteer. Barry was born and raised in Vancouver British Columbia. He moved to the Cowichan Valley in 1986. Drawn by early memorable life experiences on his uncle’s dairy farm. Barry purchased his first camera in early 2011 and photography became a passion, which in turn kindled a keen interest in birds and nature. He is an active member of the community, serving on the Board of the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society.

BONUS! In honour of the many contributions Barry Hetschko makes to our watershed partners through his photography, the CWB will purchase a a “Birds of the Cowichan Checklist” for the first 60 attendees, with all proceeds supporting the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society’s bluebird box program.
