BC Hydro promises to improve Island’s electricity grid with $3 billion investment

BC Hydro is pledging to spend $3 billion dollars over the next 10 years to improve Vancouver Island’s electricity grid.

On Friday Energy and Mines minister Josie Osborne noted new projects planned for the Island, including replacing the undersea cables which link the Island to the Mainland. The utility also plans to increase power line capacity from Nanaimo south, to meet increasing demand from new residential growth.

On the North Island, BC Hydro is upgrading the system supplying Port Alice, which will allow more and larger customers to connect to the grid. The substation in Woss will also be replaced.

BC Hydro is also funding ongoing seismic upgrade projects for the hydroelectric dam systems near Campbell River, which are expected to be complete by 2030.
