Town of Ladysmith ready to embrace working relationship, deputy mayor

A new representative will mean building a new relationship and trust according to a Ladysmith councilor.

BC NDP MLA-elect Stephanie Higginson will take over in the new riding of Ladysmith-Oceanside after beating incumbent Adam Walker, and councilor/deputy mayor Ray Gourlay says this is a chance to start fresh while helping resolve the issues around Ladysmith.

“We need to communicate the issues that matter to Ladysmith, especially since it is the smaller population centre in the riding,” Gourlay says. “We’re looking forward to a close working, and collaborative, relationship with the new MLA.”

Gourlay says once a decision is made on which party will step into government, Ladysmith council hopes to make a push to the legislature to provide more housing and eliminate red tape, also help with providing better education in the area.

“We’re going to be advocating for increased funding when it comes to housing,” he says. “Another big one is education; our school system is at capacity and beyond.

“We’re strongly advocating for a new elementary school on Davis Road.”

Gourlay says asking for assistance with infrastructure is another critical piece of the puzzle considering how aged the water reservoirs, roads and sidewalks, and a waterfront area that needs strong investment.

He says regardless of which party forms government, all council wants is the ability to work together and do what’s best for residents in the community.

“We’re willing, able and eager to make progress on these files,” Gourlay adds. “We just need a provincial government that’s collaborative and willing to come to the table with us.”

A final vote count is expected for Saturday (Oct. 26) to determine which party will govern.
