Avoid avalanche terrain today as conditions are dangerous for the Island and Coast.
Avalanche Canada says for the alpine, treeline, and below treeline, the danger rating is high for both regions.
This comes as large avalanche cycles are expected to happen with snowfall, extreme winds, and eventually rain coming for the Island, while warming comes after the snow and wind for the Coast.
For Vancouver Island, the conditions are because of recent size 2 and 2.5 avalanches from earlier this week, with rain up to 2,000 millimeters rapidly destabilizing the snowpack.
Monday saw a large slab avalanche triggered by a cornice fall on an alpine slope on Mount Cain, with explosive avalanches reported in north-facing terrain on Thursday.
They say the Sunshine Coast has also seen avalanches, with Size 1 dry loose and storm slab ones, and shooting cracks from skier traffic reported on Thursday.
Avalanche encourages you to avoid terrain during periods of heavy loading from new snow, wind, or rain, to watch for cornice failures, only travel through the simplest non-avalanche terrain with no overhead hazard, and to use extra caution for areas experiencing rapidly warming temperatures for the first time.
The danger rating will still be high for Monday but looks to go down to considerable on Tuesday.
