Warming shelter in Duncan delayed until next week, incomplete setup blamed

A warming shelter at the Ramada Inn in Duncan won’t open on time due to an inadequate set up.

The City of Duncan originally set the opening date for Nov. 15, but delays are pushing it to later next week to accommodate 24-7 services.

Lookout Housing and Health Society will be responsible for operating the facility along with outreach workers and other service providers.

According to the CVRD, once the shelter is adequately set up and staffed, it will serve as a hub for those in need to escape the elements of winter.

“The shelter will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing up to 24 spaces for individuals experiencing homelessness during winter months,” the district says.

Partners for the shelter include BC Housing, Emergency Management Cowichan and Cowichan Housing Association.
