After 15 months, the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation has raised $10 million for lifesaving equipment at the new Quw’utsun Valley Hospital.
The foundation announced the milestone at a gala event, saying community groups raised $5 million — a total that triggered a matching donation.
“It unlocked the $5 million pledged by Jim Pattison, making a total $10 million contribution to the current campaign,” the foundation said in a media release. “Guests witnessed the presentation of two cheques representing the combined efforts of the Valley to capitalize on Pattison’s incredible match challenge.”
More than 1,350 donors from across the region contributed to the campaign. The foundation said the matching pledge helped bring the community together to support the project.
“Hospital auxiliaries from across the Valley, as well as service clubs, foundations, businesses, individual donors and community fundraising events all contributed to the grand total,” the foundation said.
Leah Hollins, board chair of Island Health, said the matching campaign demonstrates the community’s commitment to strengthening health care services in the Cowichan Valley.

“The Cowichan District Hospital Foundation’s steadfast support for essential medical equipment is making a meaningful difference for patients today while helping prepare Quw’utsun Valley Hospital for the future,” Hollins said. “Island Health is deeply grateful for their leadership and their commitment to ensuring people in Cowichan communities have access to world class care close to home.”
The funds will help purchase equipment including an MRI scanner, CT scanner and equipment for operating rooms, oncology, maternity and emergency departments.
The foundation said it has now raised more than $17 million toward its $20-million fundraising goal and continues to accept donations online.
