Khowutzun Gaming Corporation announces full ownership of Chances Cowichan

Chances Cowichan has changed hands and signifies job security and a positive legacy with new opportunities for the community.

According to Cowichan Tribes, last year Khowutzun Gaming Corporation (KGC) entered into a purchase and sale agreement with the Duncan Dabber Bingo Society (DDBS), and this led to the full acquisition of Chances Cowichan by KGC.

The sale signifies a lot of positive steps for the Cowichan community, and a media release from Cowichan Tribes says they’ll range from job security to financial contributions.

“The sale agreement included commitments that reflect the respectful and collaborative relationship between KGC and DDBS,” they say. “Job security for Chances Cowichan’s approximately 60 existing employees was prioritized and all employees received employment offers.

“Additionally, financial contributions will continue to be provided to the Duncan Dabber Bingo Society’s gaming grant program, and grants to local community groups as well as transfers to Cowichan Tribes.”

Chief Cindy Daniels says the acquisition is a huge economic boost for the Nation and the Cowichan Valley.

“It’ll support greater economic self-determination for our Nation, and we’re excited to celebrate a new beginning for Chances Cowichan,” she says. “We look forward to realizing our vision to enhance guest experiences, offer meaningful training and employment opportunities, continue to support Cowichan Valley community groups and reinvest sustainable gaming revenues into Cowichan Tribes to fund our priority initiatives.”

Chances Cowichan’s director of operations Jan Collins says they’re excited to see the outcome from the change of ownership.

“As members of the Cowichan Valley, our team looks out for each other and our clients,” Collins says. “With the smooth transition to ownership under Khowutzun Gaming Corporation and the warm welcome from Cowichan Tribes’ leadership, we are excited about the future of Chances Cowichan.”

The bingo hall offers 96 paper play seats and 144 electronic seats and originally began operations at a hall located on Craig Street in 1994 before expanding in 2006.
