VIU raises half of $2 million goal for scholarships and bursaries

Vancouver Island University says it has raised more than half of its $2-million goal for student scholarships.

“Cost should never be the reason someone walks away from their dreams. Too many students are forced to delay — or abandon — their education because of financial pressures. We’re working to change that at VIU,” reads an update from the university on its Ripples of Change program.

The university says 2,400 students applied for bursaries based on financial need this year, while 1,467 were available.

“Behind those numbers are students working two jobs to stay in school. Students supporting family while trying to earn a credential,” VIU said. “Students with the talent and determination to do great things in our community. We need to ensure they have the financial support to keep going.”

The program has raised $1.1 million through 1,215 donations so far, and the university says it hopes to reach its $2-million target before next spring.
