Semi-truck driver dead after Highway 18 crash near Skutz Falls

The driver of a semi-truck is dead following a collision with an SUV on Highway 18 east of Lake Cowichan on Thursday, May 14.

Lake Cowichan RCMP said they were notified of the collision near Skutz Falls around 11:40 a.m.

“Upon arrival, police located a semi-truck into the ditch, severely crushed against trees,” said a statement from Lake Cowichan RCMP. “Police also located a white Ford Explorer SUV in the ditch with one occupant seriously injured.”

RCMP said the force of the impact caused the semi-truck to veer off the road and strike a nearby residential propane tank.

“The breach of the tank caused a propane leak which was contained by the Fire department”, said RCMP. “Unfortunately, the driver of the semi-truck did not survive the collision.”

Police said the driver of the SUV remains in hospital with critical injuries.

The incident prompted the highway to close for several hours while investigators collected evidence.

The investigation is ongoing.
