BC Ferries will begin planned upgrades at the Crofton ferry terminal next week.
North Cowichan Mayor Rob Douglas said BC Ferries advised him work is expected to begin May 26.
He said customers and nearby residents may notice increased activity and noise in the area during construction.
The project includes construction of a new lay-by berth, along with repairs and upgrades to the existing berth and trestle structures to support the introduction of two-ship service on the route between Crofton and Salt Spring Island.
“The new two-ship service anticipated to begin in 2027 will increase capacity by 20 per cent and is expected to ease traffic congestion at the Crofton terminal by increasing sailing frequency, helping vehicle queues move more smoothly, and reducing backups onto nearby roads,” said BC Ferries in a statement.
BC Ferries said periodic adjustments to terminal operations or sailing schedules may be required during construction.
“Every effort will be made to communicate additional impacts in advance wherever possible,” said BC Ferries.
