New Cowichan hospital set to open next year

The new Quw’utsun Valley Hospital/Quw’utsun Hulitun-ew’t-hw hospital in the Cowichan Valley is on track to open next year.

A provincial news release said the facility is 90 per cent complete and is scheduled to open in mid-2027

“The new Quw’utsun Valley Hospital is taking shape as a modern, purpose‑built facility, and we’re now focused on the final stages that will prepare it to deliver high‑quality care to people in the Cowichan Valley for years to come,” said Bowinn Ma, minister of infrastructure.”

Construction is planned to finish by the end of the year. Equipment will be installed soon after, alongside staff training and site orientation to prepare for opening.

“This hospital is a groundbreaking project for the Cowichan Valley,” said Debra Toporowski, MLA for Cowichan Valley. “With more space, expanded services and culturally safe care, it will give people better access to the health supports they need close to home. This is more than just a hospital, it is an investment in the health of our community for generations.”

The project is a $1.4 billion investment and will have a capacity of 204 beds. The province said it will be more than three times the size of the current hospital, with an expanded emergency department and three additional operating rooms.

There will also be nine surgical procedure rooms, six more than the current facility and twice as much parking.
