Suspect arrested in Cobble Hill sexual assault case after forensic evidence analysis

Shawnigan Lake RCMP say a suspect linked to a sexual assault in Cobble Hill nearly two years ago has been arrested and charged.

Police say the incident occurred on July 23, 2024. Officers responded to the Carlton Drive area after receiving a report that an elderly woman had been sexually assaulted.

“The RCMP Police Dog Service initially attended the area alongside frontline officers but could not track the suspect,” RCMP said in a statement. “The Island District General Investigation Section, assisted by the Island District RCMP Forensic Identification Section and Shawnigan Lake RCMP, were involved in the investigation.”

Investigators identified a suspect following forensic evidence analysis.

On June 1, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved charges against a 17-year-old suspect for break and enter and commit an indictable offence, sexual assault and disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The suspect was arrested on June 3 after a warrant was issued.

RCMP will not provide further details about the investigation as the matter is now before the courts.
