Investigation underway following suspicious vehicle fire

A vehicle fire in North Cowichan is being treated as suspicious and investigators are working to determine the cause.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said the fire started June 6 at about 2 a.m. at the Thunderbird Motor Inn. Emergency crews arrived to find two vehicles fully engulfed in flames.

Police said the fire posed a considerable risk to public safety, but crews quickly brought the blaze under control.

“Due to the proximity of the fire to occupied units, the incident was deemed an imminent risk to life,” police said.

Const. Tessa McDonald said the incident was severe and investigators are seeking information from the public.

“This was a serious incident that posed a significant risk to people staying nearby,” she said. “We’re actively working to determine what occurred and are asking anyone with information to come forward.”

Investigators are working with the RCMP Forensic Identification Services unit to determine the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP non-emergency line at 250-748-5522.
