Cowichan Valley School District approves Mill Bay school name change

A name change for Mill Bay Nature Elementary School has received the go-ahead after the Cowichan Valley School District board voted to proceed.

The change will see the school renamed Mill Bay Elementary School.

Earlier this year, the Mill Bay Nature School Parent Advisory Council (PAC) requested the change, but it was determined that regulations needed to be followed before any changes could be made.

In an open letter, Cowichan Valley School District board chair Cathy Schmidt said that after a series of community engagement sessions, it was determined the change would be welcomed and is supported by Indigenous leaders.

“Results indicate a clear preference among respondents for the proposed name change,” she said. “The board has also been advised that the Malahat First Nation chief and council have expressed their support for this proposed change.

“The board recognizes the importance of respecting the perspectives and authority of host Nations in matters that affect schools within their territories.”

The motion to approve the name change was passed on June 2.
