Section of Canada Avenue to close in both directions starting July 13 for infrastructure upgrades

A road closure is coming to Canada Avenue which is expected to be in place until the end of the year.

Canada Avenue will be closed in both directions between Philip Street and Sherman Road starting July 13 as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades in the area.

The timing aligns with the provincial fisheries window and allows crews to safely replace two critical bridges over Bings Creek while minimizing environmental impacts to the water course and fish habitat.

Businesses along Canada Avenue will remain open and can be accessed using the northbound lane on Canada Avenue between Beverly and Philip Street.

The Sherman Road roundabout will remain open except for entering onto Canada Avenue.

Road users are being asked to allow extra travel time through the detour routes along Philip, Mary and Islay streets, exercise caution and reduce speeds as they travel through the residential neighbourhoods.

Construction will take place Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend work as required.

Local traffic will only be permitted within the closure area, including access to the Cowichan Tribes Public Works and Emergency Services building.

The work is part of the larger Canada Avenue improvement project, which includes major utility upgrades, road repaving and enhancements to active transportation infrastructure.
