Nourish Cowichan wraps up Sun-a-thon with $26,205 in donations

Executive director and co-founder Fatima Da Silva says the need in the Cowichan Valley has grown each year, putting more strain on the resources needed to supply food and fight hunger.

She said although the need is increasing, the region gives back and is always ready to help, and that’s what makes fundraising so important.

“It’s amazing that people come together and raise funds for us every single year,” she said. “It’s a community that cares, and it’s so wonderful to hear the stories and how this all comes together.”

The fundraiser brought in $26,205 for Nourish Cowichan to help fund meals for kids and families. Due to the rising cost of food, Da Silva said fundraising is a key source of revenue and the money will be used to ensure there is enough food to go around.

“Every dollar that’s donated really counts for this coming school year,” she said. “We’re expecting to start with 3,500 students and I know the number will go up, so every single donation coming from the community is going toward food.”

Nourish Cowichan accepts donations year-round to help meet the growing need and fight hunger in the Cowichan Valley. Donations are accepted through its website.
