Town of Lake Cowichan receives wildfire risk mitigation grant

The Town of Lake Cowichan has secured $400,000 to help reduce wildfire risk in the community.

The funding comes through the Union of British Columbia Municipalities’ FireSmart Community Funding and Supports program and will be distributed over two years, with $200,000 provided each year through 2028.

Town officials said the money will be used to improve wildfire resilience, protect homes, properties and critical infrastructure, support FireSmart education for youth and strengthen community safety.

The town said securing funding of this size will allow it to move ahead with wildfire preparedness projects while reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers.

Officials credited FireSmart co-ordinator Elija Ellison, town staff, the fire department and council for their work in securing the grant.
