Island Health urges residents to take precautions during heat wave

Island Health is reminding Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast residents to take steps to reduce the risk of heat-related illness as hot temperatures continue across the region.

The health authority is encouraging residents to learn the symptoms of heat-related illness and check on people who may be at higher risk.

Common symptoms include heavy sweating, severe headache, muscle cramps, extreme thirst and dark urine.

People experiencing these symptoms should move to a cooler place, drink plenty of water and cool their bodies with water.

Those at higher risk of heat-related illness include people over the age of 60, infants and young children, people who are unhoused and people who are pregnant.

Current forecasts call for temperatures to drop into the low 20s by the weekend.

Visit Island Health’s website for more information on heat-related illness.
