Apartment fire that killed two people in Duncan being investigated by serious crimes unit

RCMP say a fire that killed two people at a Duncan apartment building is being investigated by the serious crimes unit.

Emergency crews were called to the Gala Vista apartments on Government St around 2:30 Friday morning.

Duncan Fire Chief Geoff Spriggs says about 50 residents are displaced and there is no timeline on when they will be able to return to the building.

A news release from North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP says Emergency Management Services is providing assistance to displaced residents.

It also notes there were additional injuries beyond the two fatalities.

“The fire is being jointly investigated by the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Serious Crime Team, Duncan Fire Department, BC Coroner Services and the Office of the Fire Commissioner to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident,” RCMP say.

Police are not releasing names of the victims.
