Coastal Fire Centre campfire ban to be lifted Thursday

The B.C. Wildfire Service is lifting its prohibition on campfires within the Coastal Fire Centre.

The ban will be rescinded throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction, which includes Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, as of noon Thursday.

“Although fire danger ratings have declined throughout much of the Coastal Fire Centre as a result of recent rainfall, along with shorter days, longer nights and cooler temperatures, the public is encouraged to continue exercising caution with the use of any open fire,” said the B.C. Wildfire Service. “It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with regulations.”

Restrictions on larger Category 2 and 3 open fires remain in place throughout most of the Coastal Fire Centre, except for the Haida Gwaii Forest District.

Anyone found contravening burning restrictions could face fines and up to one year in jail.
