Staff and volunteers at the BC Forest Discovery Centre are devastated after a weekend theft that left one of their signature holiday displays in the dark — but community support has since helped bring back the light.
According to the Centre, thieves broke in on Saturday night, stealing a large number of decorative lights and extension cords from the Ranger Station display along the Trans-Canada Highway — a key feature of their annual seasonal setup.
Manager Carol Miller says the non-profit simply can’t afford to replace the stolen items, and the incident left their team “shocked and heartbroken” after all the effort that goes into creating a festive experience for the community.
“Having thieves take all the Ranger Station lighting and extension cords has shocked our staff and volunteers, who dedicate long hours to creating a magical experience,” Miller said.
After news of the theft spread, the response from the community was overwhelming. Offers of help and financial support poured in, and an anonymous donor stepped forward to ensure the lights could shine again.
“We’re so grateful for all the support after the theft of lights at the Ranger Station for our Halloween Train,” said Miller. “Thanks to everyone who helped spread the word and kept an eye out. Your community spirit means the world to us.”
The Centre says the Ranger Station display has now been fully relit and is “back on track” for the Halloween season.
Anyone who notices suspicious activity or is approached to purchase decorative lights is asked to contact the BC Forest Discovery Centre or local RCMP.
