A small oil and gasoline spill discovered in Maple Bay has now been fully cleaned up, according to the Canadian Coast Guard.
Officials say the spill was traced to a vessel that had arrived from a Ladysmith flotilla earlier in the week. A duty officer contacted the vessel’s owner as soon as a sheen was reported on the water, and cleanup crews were deployed to contain and remove the contamination.
The Coast Guard says it will continue to monitor the area, but no further spread toward the shoreline is expected. The initial signs of the spill appeared around November 13, with cleanup efforts completed over the last several days.
Authorities report no current risk to the public or to marine life.
