Lake Cowichan RCMP investigating fatal collision near Mesachie Lake

Lake Cowichan RCMP said one person has died following a single-vehicle collision early Thursday morning.

Police responded to the incident on South Shore Road in Mesachie Lake around 1:15 a.m. The collision involved a red 2007 Honda Civic carrying five occupants.

RCMP said four occupants were transported to hospital with serious injuries and one passenger later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

“The road was closed to traffic to allow for a traffic analyst to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the crash,” said Cpl. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the B.C. RCMP. “Criminality is believed to have played a contributing factor leading up to the fatal collision.”

The investigation is ongoing.
