B.C. Wildfire Service, Cowichan agencies train for coordinated wildfire response

The B.C. Wildfire Service is highlighting its partnership with local fire departments and the Cowichan Valley Regional District in preparing for large-scale emergencies.

The agencies recently took part in a Unified Command training exercise that simulated a major wildfire affecting a community and requiring a co-ordinated response.

“Rather than operating separately, organizations work together to establish shared objectives, co-ordinate resources and make decisions as one team,” said the B.C. Wildfire Service in a statement. “This approach helps ensure a safer, more effective response, especially during complex emergencies where communities, infrastructure and natural resources may all be at risk.”

The exercise involved fire departments from Duncan, North Cowichan, Cowichan Bay, Malahat, Sahtlam and Lake Cowichan, along with B.C. Wildfire Service crews.

During the scenario, responders practised working together under a shared command structure, co-ordinating resources and making decisions as one team.

The Duncan Fire Department issued a statement thanking the B.C. Wildfire Service and local partners for their collaboration.
