Debra Toporowski seeks re-election as Cowichan Valley MLA

Debra Toporowski is looking to continue serving as the Cowichan Valley’s MLA under the BC NDP.

Toporowski was elected in 2024 after serving two terms as a North Cowichan councillor and five terms on Cowichan Tribes council. She was the first elected woman to hold both positions at the same time.

“I have been sitting in the seat for two years as the MLA and I have been an advocate for my community for over two decades. Born and raised here and Cowichan Tribes is my hometown,” she said.

Toporowski said she is proud of the BC NDP’s work on a new hospital, investments in the Cowichan watershed and a new high school in the region.

If re-elected, she said her priorities would include attracting and retaining health-care workers and improving affordability.

“When I have been on the doorsteps, that’s the top of mind of our folks here in the Cowichan valley, especially young families where we have opened up new daycare spaces and different options for families to have after school care,” she said. “We are also proposing to have measures that would make groceries more affordable and we have a plan to bring down gas prices.”

Toporowski said she believes the early election gives British Columbians a chance to choose a stable government after the NDP’s previous narrow majority.
