Update: Damaged gas line in Cowichan Bay repaired

Update: FortisBC says the damaged gas line has been repaired and traffic is back to normal on Cowichan Bay Road.

Original post: FortisBC crews are on-site near the Maritime Centre in Cowichan Bay after a gas line was accidentally struck.

The Cowichan Bay Waterworks District reported the incident shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, and said crews were on-site by noon.

The district urged anyone in the immediate area who smells gas to evacuate on foot immediately.

It also warned people not to use open flames, operate electrical switches or appliances, start vehicles or use electronic devices near the leak.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area to allow emergency crews access.

Single-lane traffic has since resumed along Cowichan Bay Road and service line repairs are underway.

The district said further updates would be issued as the situation developed.
