Dog walker praised for reporting fire at Bright Angel Park

Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue is crediting a dog walker with helping prevent a small brush fire from becoming a bigger problem near Bright Angel Park.

Crews responded Tuesday morning after the dog walker spotted the fire and called 911.

“The fire was slow-growing but had burned deep into the roots and surrounding old-growth vegetation, making it more challenging to fully extinguish,” said a statement from the fire department. “Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue crews were able to bring the fire under control and extinguish it before it could spread further.”

The department is reminding people that forests can remain dry in places despite cooler weather and rain. Fires can smoulder beneath damp-looking surfaces in roots and forest debris.
