UPDATED: Firearm report at Cowichan high school false, students admit fault

Update as of 12:21 Jan. 09, 2025: North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say students have come forward admitting they were filming a school project while using a wooden stick designed to mimic the act of shooting.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say they’re looking at video footage to determine who may have pointed a firearm at a tree near Cowichan High School this morning.

The call came into the detachment today (Jan. 9) at around 9:30 a.m., but after a search of the area police say they were unable to locate an individual or a firearm in Kin Park.

The school was placed on hold and secure for the safety of students and staff while RCMP checked the grounds for evidence.

No witnesses have come forward as of yet, but police say they’re looking at CCTV footage of the school’s area for any leads.

Anyone with information should contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment at 250-748-5522.
