A new record has been set by a Cowichan Valley swimmer after attending a provincial meet in Kelowna.
The BC Master Swimming Championships hosting more than 400 swimmers from across the province as each put on a noteworthy performance.
But Duncan masters swim club coach Bruce Clarke said the real excitement came when Daniel Vanden Dugen set a record in the 200 Backstroke for men 45 to 49.
“He swam extremely well,” said Clarke. “The record stood since 2009, but Vanden Dugen broke it by a fraction of a second to put our Cowichan best swimmer on the record.”
According to Clarke, the honour of breaking the record is testament to dedication, staying in shape and a tribute to Vanden Dugen’s leadership.
“He’s usually the one who wants to do more, so this is appropriate credit for a fella who really wanted to stay fit,” said Clarke. “He swam and surprised himself a little.”
Vanden Dugen beat the record with a time of 2:21.19.
