Local First Nations preparing for National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations

Cowichan Tribes is inviting the community to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day this weekend.

The Quw’utsun Mustimuhw celebration will take place Sunday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Siem Lelum gym and field.

The event will feature a barbecue lunch, traditional slahal and bone games, drumming, singing, dancing and medicine-making, along with knitting demonstrations, a vendor market, bouncy castles, rock climbing and door prizes.

In a statement, Cowichan Tribes said the day will be guided by Quw’utsun teachings centred on family, unity and working together.

Organizers said everyone is welcome to join the celebration of culture, community and Indigenous traditions.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is reminding residents that other local events are planned for National Indigenous Peoples Day, including one Friday, June 19 in Ladysmith at Transfer Beach hosted by the Stz’uminus First Nation from noon to 3 p.m.
