North Cowichan gives green light for traffic improvements near Crofton Elementary School

North Cowichan council has approved traffic safety improvements for York Avenue in Crofton.

The municipality said staff will install an electronic speed reader board facing northbound traffic on York Avenue near Crofton Elementary School.

Other initiatives include narrowing the existing travel lanes on York Avenue, installing pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at the unsignalized crosswalk at the Joan Avenue intersection and an interim curb bulge to remove unsafe perpendicular parking on the west side of York Avenue at Joan Avenue.

The municipality will also arrange for warning signs near the sharp bend at the south end of York Avenue.

The improvements follow concerns from a Crofton resident about speeding in front of the school.
