Cowichan Tribes Council to replace outgoing Toporowski

Cowichan Tribes Chief and Council has accepted the resignation of former councillor Debra Toporowski and will begin the search for a replacement.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Debra at the Council table for many years,” says Cowichan Tribes Chief Cindy Daniels.

According to Tribes Custom Election Law, if a vacancy “does not affect the ability of Council to maintain quorum, the position can remain vacant.”

The law also states that at council discretion the seat can be offered to the candidate who received the next highest number of votes in the most recent election.

Chief Cindy Daniels says that since it’s early in the 4-year term, council will offer the position to the candidate with the next highest votes.

More updates on filling the vacancy will be discussed at the November 26th meeting.
