Water levels in Holland Lake are declining and the Town of Ladysmith says they’re taking action to preserve water.
Starting Friday, July 3, Stage 3 water restrictions will be in place to limit the amount of watering residents in Ladysmith, Stz’uminus First Nation and the Diamond River District can use.
The town said although rain is in the forecast, it won’t be enough to impact the current drought situation.
“This is in alignment with the Cowichan Valley Regional District, which is also moving to Stage 3 on July 3,” the town said.
Director of infrastructure services Tim Tanton said the town knows further restrictions will have a drastic impact on the area, but measures need to be taken now to prevent levels from reducing further.
“Holland Lake has been declining steadily at approximately three per cent per week and was at 84.3 per cent on June 25,” he said. “We’re currently in BC Drought Level 4 earlier than normal this year and the forecasted rainfall isn’t expected to make a significant difference.”
Residents are being asked to observe the restrictions or face a $2,000 per day fine.
