CVRD: Toxic soil dump permit near Shawnigan Lake infringes on local zoning bylaw

The Cowichan Valley Regional District wants a permit to dump toxic soil near Shawnigan Lake to be reversed because it’s infringing on a local zoning bylaw.

Chief Administrative Officer Brian Carruthers says the CVRD will be going forward with its petition to the BC Supreme Court.

He says the bylaw does not allow the property to be used for a dump to treat contaminated soil.

Meanwhile, the Shawnigan Residents Association is also fighting against the permit and have filed for a separate review in BC Supreme Court.

The Environmental Appeal Board denied an attempt to get it overturned in March.
