VIU aims to lift people out of poverty

Vancouver Island University and its partners are vowing to get children in its jurisdiction signed up to benefit from federal and provincial education savings programs.
Dr. Ralph Nilson, VIU President and Vice-Chancellor says it doesn’t cost families anything to sign up for the Canada Learning Bond and the BC Training and Education Savings Grant…..
Nilson says statistics show that a child living in a low-income family, who has at least 500 dollars in an education savings account is four times more likely to enroll in a post-secondary institution.
Nilson says VIU is also looking at ways to add to the pot of money available to low income children who want to go to university.
