Fire near the Malahat backs up traffic

Four fire departments and the BC Wildfire Service is assisting with a fire alongside the Malahat this afternoon (Thurs).
The fire broke out around one o’clock, 2 point 5 kilometers north of Bamberton and northbound traffic on the Malahat is no longer getting through.
Traffic is being detoured at the Shawnigan Lake turnoff.
Marg Drysdale with the Coastal Fire Centre says the fire is point 7 hectares in size and the BC Wildfire Service has some staff on site….
The four fire departments on scene, include Mill Bay, Malahat, Cowichan Bay and Shawnigan Lake.
Drysdale says as embers from the fire cross the road in the wind, the southbound lanes may close as well.
