Local man recognized with Award of Valour

A local Island Health Protection Services Officer has received recognition by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety.

Charles Kraeling got an Award of Valour for his actions in dealing with a difficult person at the Cowichan District Hospital back in July.

Kraeling says he was called to a situation where a patient was waving around a knife, threatening himself, patients and staff in a four-bed ward….
Kraeling is one of Island Health’s 90 full-time Protection Services Officers who are located in health-care facilities throughout the Island.
They respond to a variety of calls including dealing with volatile individuals, damage to property, fire safety and prevention, first aid and patient and staff escorts.
