Islands Trust Chair not happy about bridge study

A bridge from Gabriola Island to Nanaimo will be the focus of a feasibility study by the Ministry of Transportation.
They says it’s in response to a petition signed by a significant number of Gabriola Island residents, who want to see a bridge replace the Route 19 ferry.  The recently formed Gabriola Bridge Society has been pushing the idea, and on their Facebook page they call the announcement “great news”.
An independent consultant will look at possible locations for a fixed link, estimate the cost and compare how that stacks up to running the ferry.
But Islands Trust Chair Sheila Malcolmson says that goes against the island’s own official community plan, which the province signed off on.
Malcolmson says it’s another example of the province forging ahead without proper consultations with key stakeholders and partners like local governments.
